Yeats Country Hotel, Rosses Point, Sligo

Every February mum and I head away for a spa weekend to celebrate her birthday. I try and book it in November or December so by the time February comes round, it’s always much needed after a long January!

On Friday night we headed off to Rosses Point in Sligo to spend the weekend at the three star Yeats Country Hotel. This hotel (with its spa, situated close to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and next to an 18-hole golf course) fames itself for its relaxing, leisure breaks.

We arrived about 9.30pm on Friday and after checking in, headed down to the Winery Bar for a drink. The place was packed (right out to the lobby which has tables and chairs beside the big open fires) and a singer/guitarist was entertaining the crowds. There was an enjoyable ‘pub’ atmosphere but we only stayed for a quick drink.

On Saturday morning we went to the hotel’s Eslinore Restaurant for a hot buffet breakfast. There was a notable variety of cereals, fruit and breads (scones, wheaten etc), as well as a full Irish selection which included bacon, sausage, black pudding, tomato, fried egg, and hashbrowns. Mum and I filled up our plates rightly!

We then headed out to explore what the local area has to offer. Firstly, we headed to the beautiful Rosses Point peninsula, followed by a short drive to County Leitrim to see Glencar Waterfall (about 20 minutes away.) The waterfall is striking and it was really nice to spend some time there. Finally we headed to Sligo city centre for a spot of shopping! We’re not big shoppers but came away with some bargains in hand.

We arrived back to our hotel about 4pm and went straight to the adjoining Leisure Centre, which is complimentary for all residents. The centre boasts an 18m swimming pool, Jacuzzi, gym and Sauna and Steam rooms. We didn’t try out the gym, but we did spend over an hour swimming in the pool and relaxing in the Jacuzzi and steam room. A lovely way to end the afternoon!

On Saturday night, as part of our package, we were treated to a two-course dinner in the hotel. For starters I chose the potato and leek soup while mum went for the chicken and mushroom vol-au-vent. For mains I picked the 10oz steak, and mum selected the leg of lamb. We both enjoyed the meal which also came with a glass of wine each.

On Sunday morning, we had booked into the Eros Spa at 9am to try out their well-known seaweed baths. As the name might suggest, these are steaming hot baths filled with silky smooth seaweed which left our skin feeling really moistured! It was so relaxing to just sit back and enjoy the baths for half an hour.

We checked out about 11 that morning before heading back to Belfast. The break was just what we needed- a nice weekend away to do very little, but to unwind and put our feet up! I particularly enjoyed the seaweed baths and would have liked to have tried some other treatments! The place is perfect if you’re looking for a reasonably priced spa weekend.
