Just this week seven pubs in Northern Ireland were chosen to feature in the 2015 Michelin ‘Eating Out in Pubs’ Guide- one if them being The Pheasant in Annahilt, Hillsborough.
Having just booked the pub for dinner the day before the guide came out, it was a ‘pheasant’ surprise (too much?!)
We’d booked for early Saturday evening, for the daily ‘meal deal’, available 12.00-6.30pm. It’s £12.95 for two courses, or £16.95 for three. There’s a fine dining restaurant but we ate in the downstairs bar, in one of the booths of this traditional country pub.
For starters I chose seared beef strips with Asian vegetables, noodle salad and hoisin dressing. Barry had the Game terrine, local smoked pheasant, red onion and cranberry chutney with warm breads. Priding itself on local produce, the pheasant is from the neighbouring Larchfield Estate.
For mains we both went for the Estate shot ground venison burger with Cashel blue melt, tobacco onions and Bombay fries. The burger was bursting full of flavour- from the lovely gamey taste of the meat, the strong blue cheese right through to the crispy onions. The Bombay fries also added an extra spice.
Finally for dessert Barry chose the Baileys cheesecake while I opted for ‘Chocolate Nemesis’, which was a warm chocolate ‘melt in the middle’ pudding served with honeycomb ice cream. It was rich, gooey and chocolatey- just how I like a dessert!
The food felt very fresh and both of us really enjoyed all three courses, especially the venison burger. The two three-course Meal Deals come to just £33.90 in total, so well worth the drive out to Annahilt!
